What is WebP?
WebP is a modern image format from Google. It supports both lossy and lossless compression as well as transparent backgrounds. At similar quality, WebP files are usually noticeably smaller than PNG and JPG.
All major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari 14 or later) natively support WebP.
What are the benefits of SVG to WebP?
On the web, WebP makes pages load faster and saves bandwidth while keeping transparent backgrounds — ideal for website icons, illustrations, and similar assets.
When you need to use a vector graphic as a bitmap on the web (for example in a component library or third-party platform that cannot use SVG directly), WebP is a great balance of quality and size.
Lossy or lossless — how to choose?
Lossy WebP discards visually insignificant details during encoding, producing smaller files. It suits most web use cases, and the default 80–90 quality is usually enough.
Lossless WebP keeps every detail and suits assets that need exact reproduction or repeated editing, but the files are larger.
How compatible is WebP?
All modern browsers support WebP. However, some older software, image viewers, or early mobile systems may not open WebP. If you plan to send the file to others or use it in a legacy environment, confirm compatibility first.
